I wonder if it still downloads the GCF, I'll have to check that.

Goddamnit. steam just raped my HL again... even when i have the auto uppdate and steam cloud turned off in properties.
I pressed to start msc and steam instaltly forced some short uppdate. after that uppdate were complete (about 10sec) i get 2 error messages showing up, being unable to start the game.
window 1."hl.exe - Entry Point Not Found"
"The procedure entry point_AIL_stream_sample_handle@4 could not be located in the dynamic link library mss32.dll."

Window 2. "Fatal Error"
"could not load hw.dll. Please try at a later time."

Anyone else had this problem aswell? Curse the damn steam uppdates

Still trying to figure a way to make an auto-patcher for this BS - keep doing install/uninstalls on the laptop to no avail, so far.

Be very sure to close Steam before applying the patch in here though.

I had the exact same problem (Steam decided to update Half-Life despite my settings) but deleting all files & subfolders ('cept the \msc\ subfolder) and extracting Madman's old Half-Life install again fixed it.

That happened to me yesterday! Had to re-download and re-copy all the files over again. No reason at all, steam decided to start updating half-life, even though my settings said to not update.

Bleh, been experimenting with installers... Seems they do need the decompressed Valve folder, so I can't just go delete folders and files willy-nilly... Will have to leave instructions to start with a fresh, clean install, before using any self-installing patch. :\

How is a fully decompressed folder, with 3,768 individual files in it, "more optimal" than a nice clean, contiguously defraggable GCF!? Grrr...

Probably faster loadtimes in games, although the improvement would be negligible in the ancient HL1...

The whole reason we have WAD's, PAK's, VMT's, VPK's... and GCF's... Is because a consolidated file provides faster load times than several hundred separate files, and can be made easily contiguous on the hard drive. In addition, it eats less overhead in terms of file space and system handles.

...That was, pretty much their whole argument for setting up GCF's to begin with. :\

It's almost like they've hired a whole new team that has their own idea of how to do things, and has no real understanding as to why they were done otherwise before... I suppose, it may very well be, they fired all their senior coders, in favor of cheaper new ones. Would explain some of this chaos (folder restructure as well seemed an odd move for a team that was praising the wonders of individual user configuration as a feature for so long).

Meeh why do they even change something that works. even the main game HL wont start properly. I think i take a break from this game untill some proper fix for it is done. to annoying haveing to reinstall everytime.
Maybe it's time to make a mass complain to steam about it make em rollback:p

could it be possible for you to fix the issues instead of downgrading HL, or would that be too complicated?

No way to do it from this side. :( The client.dll doesn't give us hardware level control over the mouse interface functions, it depends on the engine's and the dll's above it. Best I could do, is force a centerview command when you close an inventory window, but that wouldn't restore mouse control (you'd just be staring forward, instead of up).

I'd hoped maybe we could mitigate the graphics glitches, at bit, by dumping the texture memory between maps, but no one's figured out how to do that. But, as with the mouse, we don't have hardware level control over how the graphics are created by the engine - best we can do is add layers/filters to what's already rendered.

And the Green Screen of Death is straight out... :\

How would dumping the texture memory help fix graphical issues?

Well, they seem to build up over time - usually the thing is good to go out of the starting window. ...And the damn game does keep its texture memory from map to map, for some damn reason (going from Nightmare Thornlands to Edana will provide a quick demonstration of this). So, I figured, if we started with a clean slate on each map change, it'd be less apt to overflow into other areas of the texture memory space over time, or whatever it is they be doing.

It's a wild stab in the dark of course - we can't actually see what's going on in there.

So every time I go to a new map, all the textures are still loaded from the map I'm leaving? Do you know how they are loaded into memory, or at least where? If there is no built-in function for clearing the loaded textures, if you can find where it loads them in memory then you can erase them yourself, maybe.

The engine provides a way to load in textures, but not to free them? Seems weird.

I neaver get the graphical error on first map upon starting game. It allways comes after like 5 map changes. so if im going to run some big map i restart game during the map change. Thats a good tip if you have lots of graphical problems.

I've worked up a fix (if you don't have your original installation) and it seems to work (according to Darkangel) but it gives a weird error.

Code:
Was not possible to locate point of entry of the procedure _RIB_Alloc_provider_handle@4 on the DLL (dynamic-link library) mss32.dll.

You get it when you start the game and when you join a server.

But anyways if you just press ok to get past the errors it works fine, here's the link:

http://www.mediafire.com/?x2bd06e2d2scu48

EDIT: I found a fix for the mss32.dll problem, after you backup your folders, delete everything but your mod folders, and then install the patch and it should fully downgrade without any problems.
Bugger...

Now, if I try to connect to a server that's running a properly updated Half-Life, under this version, I get a client.dll doesn't match server's error... Despite the fact it clearly does.

It doesn't do this if I connect to the same server with the updated version of Half-Life, but of course, then my mouse fubars to high hell...

*sigh*

Found this today... http://steamcommunity.com/games/70/anno ... 3526151889

I opted back into the beta and the mouse works fine when exiting the 'F' menu and inventory. Unfortunately, the mouse still has clicking problems when you hover over the options or try to click...
