Do any of you guys use that or 3DS max? My dad was cleaning out the old bookshelf when we stumbled upon 4 books, one for tutorials and the other three for user reference.

Do you think these books would be a good learning tool still?

Not sure.
I have a 2007 book for 3D max 9 but I guess its not the 2009 version (still useful tough)

However try to get an up to date book or tutorial because sometimes new version change functions from place to place and that can get confusing when following a book step-by-step.

Learning to use MS3D actually helped alot when starting to use 3Dmax

the viewpoint manipulating and most common buttons you'll use haven't changed since the early versions of max, so they're probably good to read through and mess around with, but if you use a modern version of max you'll probably need to look online for tutorials or the in-program helper for newer functions

it probably doesn't matter though since HL doesn't use any of that and at most you'll just need help with any external plugins you load into max. the only thing that's changed significantly over the years is animation ability and newer rendering, both of which you don't need to do.

Well he didnt specify if it was for HL modelling so we must take all into consideration.

Still if you do use it for HL modelling, get some import/export plugins.
