YOU DONT GOT TIME TO MAKE A PROFILE
Yea... thats because at least one of two things is happening:
You have a firewall on
or
the people who made the server did not read this thread.

im not the expert on this stuff, but from what ive bothered to pay attention to concerning this problem those are the two main (or only) causes.

btw, its nicknamed the "black screen" i think :D

That's not true, clients with active firewalls can join.

Here's what every server admin must do:

1) Forward ports:
2200 UDP
2200 TCP
2400 UDP
2400 TCP
47624 UDP
47624 TCP
27015 UDP
Those seven ports are the only ones needed (DarkWasp joined my server after I opened only these ports, thanks DarkWasp  )
See http://www.portforward.com/ for help.

2) Make sure your firewall allows traffic through the seven ports mentioned above. How to do this greatly differs per firewall so you'll have to be creative...

3) Go to the /ms folder and edit/create listenserver.cfg (server you start through the game config file) and/or server.cfg (dedicated server config file). Add the following line in the file(s):
ms_ip "x.x.x.x"

Where the x's represent your outside IP.
To find out what your outside IP is go to
http://www.whatismyip.com/

Example:
ms_ip "37.38.148.208"

That's all.

Actually, I'm still having trouble with this error, the retry character data connect one that is. I can join a few servers just fine but that problem is, is that it does this on my listen server as well. I have all the configuration set up the way that the people on these forums suggested, I even tried Thotie's config set as well. All I can seem to do is get into the desired map, then just sit there while it says Retrying Character Data Connect over and over in the console.

Another weird thing that never happened until now is this wierd constant clickity-clack noise, it almost sounds like if you are in toxic waste in Half-Life.
*EDIT: The Clicking noise was cause by a server I went to earlier, I would still like to know how to stop it though.*

I hope you guys can help me with this stupid Character Data Connect error because my friends can all make servers without a hitch. But that also might be because they just got it...

Now that you mention it, I've had this before too. I don't remember on which server it was, but I was walking around in edana with about three others, and I was like "Do you guys hear that toxic-waste noise too...?" and they didn't hear it :oldshock:

Anyway, make sure you have a static (inside) IP (http://www.portforward.com), then open the seven ports I listed (also http://www.portforward.com) and then set ms_ip to your outside IP (http://www.whatismyip.com)... The ms_ip value goes in listenserver.cfg (listen server) and/or server.cfg (dedicated server).

Tis a sticky sound, had that too, quitting HL and restarting fixes it.

...I wish I knew what was causing *my* server to get the character retry connect bastage thingie... Or I'd be running a server still. I've powered down - but I think I forgot to cycle the modem... Hosting too many files just now to try that, probably will be straight through new years.

Hopefully, by that time, MS:C will be out and it won't mattah.

It almost seems to me like Listen Servers don't even work for me anymore. This makes me very sad because all my friends can play by themselves in their own servers and stuff, but when I make a Listen Server with sv_lan 1 and all the other recommended config's (All your other suggestions which I already had by the way), I STILL can't play. I can only connect to (Certain) Dedicated servers I guess...

*EDIT: Now something even stranger has happened. It seems it's only me that's having this problem. I went into my brother's room to see if he could make a server, and indeed he can, he can play in his own LAN server, and I CAN JOIN HIM... I am seriously confused as to why, He can create a LAN server that I can join, whereas, I can't even join MY OWN LAN server.*

*EDIT 2: On a side note, I have no problems creating servers in, CS, RC2, or The Ship, maybe ESF. But for some reason I can't even play in my MS server. :( *
