I've been getting this error ever since I upgraded my computer, although this could only be a coincidence. Basically whenever I join any server, as soon as I start moving I get huge ping spikes (up to 4000latency) and this keeps happening the entire time. The game is unplayable for me.

I've tried restarting the computer, changing my network settings connections, restarting steam, deleting the clientregistry.blob

Sometimes a fresh Steam install will instill odd net settings, as will pre-installed copies of Windows. Vista/7 will also sometimes setup odd QOS scheduling settings that interfere with HL1 games.

Not mentioned there, is you can try removing QOS scheduling from your network components (exactly how to do this will vary wildly with your version of Windows). Some network adapters will also try to "optimize" traffic in strange ways, and shutting down superfluous network services, like the ALG or Wireless Zero, will fix it. If your adapter is using these services, you can try to find a network-adapter specific program to replace them or, if using such third party software, uninstall it and use the Windows systems instead.

I've got this problem before too, it usually goes away after a few minutes. If not i remembered what i did back then to *fix* this crap, restarting my internet connection seemed to fix it, its a wireless connection so i dont know if its because of that.

How do I get out of this box?
I had the same problem, If you go into your steam settings you can alter your internet speed that is given to steam.

Give it somthing more accurate to your internet, That's what fixed mine, Good luck :p

I've tried everything listed or suggested but it's still not fixed. Could the router possibly be causing a problem? My brother switched it to a POS D-Link which seems to cause all sorts of problems.

That should be on the list of suggested issues on the link. Try another router, and if it's not an option, fiddle with the router's settings. Sometimes they have their own QOS packet system, or port-by-port optimization.

Switched the router and tried everything listed, no fix. I'm going to reinstall Steam itself to see if that does anything. If it doesn't then I guess it's the end of MSC for me.

Tried a complete reinstall of steam, still get the error. *sigh*

Only other possibility I can think of is weird registry settings, usually caused by net optimization packages, although sometimes pre-installed windows packages can have them too. Maybe, if you have a high-end network card (on-board or otherwise) it might also have some odd packet optimizations. There's so many registery settings to check though - Yer kinda down to putting in another network card, reinstalling the drivers for your existing card, or reinstalling Windows then.

I hope I won't have any such issues with my new rig and OS, haven't played MSC with it yet, just waiting for the new full installer.
