What range does the volume in playsound accept? I can't tell much of a difference, if any above ~10.

0-10 (float). It caps, code side, so if it gets a bogus number it'll make it 0 or 10.
Lower attenuation will make it audible from further away, though I'm not sure what the full range of attenuation is - just that the default is 0.8.
