Skinning needed?

Are there any good tutorials or explanations on how to properly skin a model, i would like to try and am kind of offering to do a few re-skins if needed. (i would really love to see some better looking orcs and human NPCs) From what I've seen of the skin lay outs its kinda boggling how they work, like how do you know what parts overlayed where? i have in the past taken some already made skins and pretty much completely re-did them, im sure i can do a few im my spare time for fun, only thing was my bro handed me the files and i just worked on them soo..... how do you get the BMPs out of the model "package"

Oh my god, razor, you're such a retard. I mean DAYUM. :oldshock:
To get the BMPs out of the model you need a model viewer. I use Jed's Half-Life Model Viewer. There's an extract texture (or similar) function in the texture tab IIRC. :wink:

Jelly is 100% right.
All ye need is Jed's HL Model Viewer...You can extract textures with that, and even see how the model is lined up with the texture...Though I ought to warn you that the orc has a horrible UVmap, and therefore there isn't much that can be done in the skinning department on that one :|

really, that sucks, the orcs are always one of those monsters ya see everywhere so i thought perhaps it was time for a overhaul and to literally give them a face lift XD

okso i saw what ya meant with the UV map and how the alignment is way off, well i corrected that sort of on the texture side but....the thing wont import, what am i doing wrong? i have the name the same "Orcface.bmp" and i also tried calling it "Orcface2.bmp" but no luck and a few times after trying that i crashed the program lol

You need to save it as an 8bit bitmap. What program are you using to edit the textures?

ooh i was using CS2, and i didn't check how i was saving it, i opened as bitmap and saved as bitmap

1. Rip of picture from model.
2. Find picture and open it with Photoshop CS2
3. Press Image - Mode - RGB Colors
4. (After reskinning) Image - Mode - Indexed Color.
5. Add to model.

oh i will be, i sure wish that models didnt use bitmaps though, really rapes the detail in them *shrugs*

slightly better i guess, i moved they eyes and the nose around slightly so they at least better tried to align with the UV map, still find they eyes to be a bit big for the model but meh XD

I do need five new old wizard faces to go onto this model
