8) yep

i still havent figured out a way to put a sky on my map with out it ending up being a box around my whole map. everytime i try to just put it over, i just get a leak that i cant find. and my new maps are more dynamic in altitude, so i cant just seal the top with a sky textured brush.

You can make a night system of your own, make a light_enviornment that has a deep blue color, or a light blue with a deep glare... And set the sky to space.

Crow!! Do not forget that the sky is a solid itself! You can seal off your map with it!

As for the question, I myself highly reccomend VHE. (Valve Hammer-Editor) If you need the MS.fgd, I think you can grab a copy at http://www.freewebs.com/ms-jm/. Also get Zoner's Half-Life Tools... Crow has already posted links so I don't need to!

[edit] Ok, fine, I edited it. Happy?

[edit] This is Cyax, I had to edit it also!

I know I know, but I've tried that, and I always get a leak or something wierd. Thats mostly because i treid to fix it at the end, and so all errors that having a box solved came up and i didnt know where they were or how to fix them.

I would do it on my new maps, but its really hard with a map that doesnt have a flot top you can just lay it over. My maps have mountains and stuff, and the edge of the map rises and falls.

so i dunno...

Actually, a sky texture wont always seal your map. It certainly won't seal it from HLRAD's point of view. To stop that, you need to put a wall behind/around your sky.

Remember, no matter how low you put your sky to the player, it'll still look like it's miles above him. It doesn't stop light, so it won't be lit by his torch or anything.

You can have slopey mountains and such bleed into a box that they connect to without a gap, should be okay.

This is a bad example here, because it looks like there's a box around the map. In actuality, this is because the room itself is square. :) But here's the main ceiling of Gateroom sectioned off in a few steps (where you look up and see the twin gyros):

skybox2.jpg

skybox3.jpg

The clip brush in the second image is just to tell the compiler that the player can't move into that area, and not to check for viewable angles from there. Saves much time, clip nodes, and some map size. Any area players can't get into should be filled with clip brush, according to Verc.

Note there are no gaps between any of these boxes, they are all glued together. Also, again, you wouldn't normally need a sky this high up, if not for the fact that my little dome is there.

If the edges of your map are odd shapes, you may need to stretch the back end (non visible) side of them into right angles. The compiler sometimes does slightly odd things with acute angles of anysort. This can cause leaks that don't appear in Hammer.

Wait... Its not a good think to post a link for that?

By the way Crow, do you use ZHLT?

Hmmm, a simple solution would be to always make your sky with a solid behind it as I see you did, thats what I use to do before I found a better method... I actually put solids behind the sky in MS_Quest. (Ack! That map blew hardcore!)

What was your better method?

Not normally, no... In one of my weirder Gateroom tunnel attempts, I tried to make a 'skybridge' of bones with clouds rushing past you and some howeling winds, completely surrounded by sky. Setting up a tunnel through the sky connected with a solid wall did cause that issue. But providing the wall doesn't poke through the skybrush, this doesn't happen. Remember the wall and sky brush must touch perfectly, with no gap between them.

Ingame screensot of that room, looking up from inside:

As you can see, wall doesn't show.

EDIT: (Looking at Highlands): Also note, a sky brush must be sky ON ALL SIDES.

Kuroneko: Ehhh... You're letting us distribute the FGD now? (not that you actually NEED it for map design, but it does make life easier). Does this mean we can discuss MS map entities, bug fixing, and AMX configurations without getting banned? Or should I shut up while I'm ahead of myself...

Eh... Three of us have had AMX working on our servers for some time now... We've actually already gotten around some 1.35 bugs issues using it. There's a hacked adminmod that works too... But I prefer the AMX.

...maybe I should rephrase that question...

Are we allowed to discuss AMX modding/scripting for MS here? And are we allowed to discuss MS entity specifics that may allow people to cheat, etc? Not with that intention, of course, but rather with that of making better and more sophisticated MS maps and for the betterment of the game.

Well, if the results bring more players and potential content developers to a less buggy game, it's most certainly not in vain. Nearly as importantly, if, as you say, you are going to have a system for new maps, then any decent maps made could likely be converted for use with MS:C with a fair amount of ease.

Short of a release from the developers themselves, I can think of no greater hope for the future of the game.

That means that 1.35 is and has been far out of our control for quite some time. Besides, it gets tiresome to constantly delete such nonsence. Besides, someone would just ak him in PM or something for the link anyway.

Seems the best hope for gathering more developers and more content.

However, it would be nice if people would stop distributing cheat programs and maps. Most aren't of any use for development. (Granted, I did ripent "sell" to figure the syntax for msitem_spawn, but I never actually needed to load the map.) Could just provide the ent files of the cheat maps. Make it so people have to design their own, at least.
