Widescreen issue?

I dunno if it's just Half-Life or maybe MSC, but I have a new monitor and to get the correct resolution I have to set it to Widescreen. But this causes two problems I've encountered so far.

1) Chat works but doesn't display all of the sentence (Made it difficult trying to do a quest)
2) Overlay messages in the top left sometimes chose not to display (Killed the blacksmith, no message displayed saying what dropped, same with Calrian).

The only way I've ever managed to resolve that issue is to copy the gfx\vgui\fonts folder from another mod, and rename the files to match my horizontal resolution. I might just include some of those files in the next full installer for good measure.
