I host a listenserver of MS and I'm connected to FN. I use it to play with a friend of mine. But one thing we noticed is that it never shows up in the server list. He connects by connecting via my external I.P. My server was in the list yesterday, but has never been before and isn't now (It's up as I type this).

Also, I installed (I think) the files that allow you to spawn on a map even if you aren't in the right area/transition. But it doesn't seem to work?

Edit: Just to add that, sv_lan is set to 0. Typing Status in the console says my IP is a local address (192.169.X.X) yet my friend joins by an external (82.something.something.something). My computer is on the routers DMZ and I also have the half-life ports all forwarded anyway...

I only know 1 thing about that kind of stuff. heartbeat! type "heartbeat" in your console. It might help, it might not.

lets the master server know your serv is there

edit:

and the ip given to you from status is because your running the server. It gives your router IP which 'you' would normally have to connect through (or lan members). Non-LAN members have to connect through the external IP address.

My servers do not show up for me either when I host from my home pc, but they do for other people usually.

Well I typed it in whilst playing and nothing... Should I add it to the listenserver.cfg?

(Yes I changed map after typing in the command for it to take effect)

check my edit above.

Have you asked friends if they could see it after heartbeat? make sure their filters have nothing selected.
It's most likely that it's just not showing up for 'you' because you're running it. Check the LAN server list maybe..and if that doesnt work, add the router ip given by 'status' to your favourites.

Well in my experiance of half-life, and I've been playing that since day 1. I have always been able to see my servers when hosting, and the IP given by "Status" has always been the external IP even when running accross the router.

He's not around right now, but I have it up at the moment, can anyone see a server along the name of "Xeropaces' Place".

My experiences is that Steam just doesn't like the way a lot of people's routers work, and many people can't see their HL1 servers in the Steam browser no matter what they do.

As for the spawn anywhere maps, just follow the instructions in the readme. If it doesn't install right, it's usually pretty obvious (you should see errors in the dos window).

If you have their IP, you can still connect to them. Usually you can even add them to your favorites - they just don't show up on the standard list.

So my server's are stuck private then basicaly :/

I don't get it, my servers have always shown up, I used to host all sorts of dedicated servers on an old machine. Who's sadly now struggling to boot so I can't use it as a dedicated host. This machine has always allowed me to host listenservers that show up... Then something happened one day and they didn't. I added myself to the DMZ and they did again...Now they're not again, grr something must have changed :S

And why did it randomly show up in the list yesterday?

My information.
A) Reset Your Router's Configurations

B) To do this, go to your local IP-Address and turn it off. Perhaps for thirty or forty-five seconds.

C) Once thirty to forty-five seconds have gone by, turn the router back on in the Router-Wizard (I suspect you have one, unless this is a 1980's router).

D) DO NOT TURN ROUTER OFF VIA POWER SWITCH!!! You must do it through the router wizard where it doesn't REALLY turn it off, but merely resets settings.

E) Redo the DMZ crap, and only that so it doesn't conflict/go-haywire with forwarded ports on an open DMZ (since you only need one set or the other).

F) If it is still acting up on you, it is something you did wrong, perhaps not in following these steps... but maybe one of your favorite porn-flicks had an attached virus :p

I can say that I myself, having just reinstalled my puter, was for a few moments having trouble getting my server to heartbeat to the Steam master servers. Quickly realized I forgot to re-assign my puter a unique-IP for my router. Fixed it up right quick, so that's another thing to look into.

The portforwarding.com (STEP 5) part of the "how to make a MSC dedicated server" is THE most important bit, if you have a router.

Well Thothie, the truth is I've had all those ports open for Half Life Steam for about a year and half :p I checked and they're still correct for my router. It doesn't make much sense =/ I used to be able to host.

Tis not enough to have the ports open on some routers, on those (like mine) ya also have to have a specific IP suffix for the router to use, and the computer has to be using it (ie. have a static internal IP). Hence portforwarding.com's "Do Not Skip This Step" section

If you reinstalled your puter or some such, your internal IP would have reset.

Ok I set up a static IP.... Even though my I.P. has never changed...

On the router I have all the ports fowared and DMZ set to this static IP and it's not changed.
Note: My firewall is also configured fine.
