I'm curious, because I can never seem to get any experience in parry...well, ever. I generally use short swords, and haven't had a shield up until late. I also now have a folded steel blade, but never really gain xp for parrying.

I guess what I'm asking is - how do you/how does parrying work?

One day, you'll randomly parry then you'll start gaining parry levels....Fear that day.

True. Await the day parry is dependant on what you carry on your hands

Get a shield.

Hopefully we'll do away with the weirdness of parry in the future.

Thanks everyone for the speedy replies in this. My friends and I have been wondering how it works for a while (we figured a shield might be what we lacked, so we picked one up), so it's good to know how it actually works. I would have chimed in to thank earlier but...I kind of dozed off ^^; (Less than two hours of sleep will do that to you)

You can get Parry very early if you want to put some work into it. Frankly you gotta buy the common expensive shield you can get in Helena (two is good). Go into the sewer and look for the leech somewhere deep in the map with a ladder to the surface. Just hold the shield infront of the leech and you'll "eventually" get some parry exp.
