The server will be a 8 player slot server

I recall someone saying that more than 10 players on a server=crash. But it'll probably be ok More servers is good.

It's all about the bandwidth...

So, what kind of internet connection do you have? If your upload rate isn't high enough, you'll find that players will lag and drop out of your server. If you have say a 1 Mega bit connection, it's actually a 128 KB. You need about 3-5KB per person, maybe more.

There's a big difference between...

There's a big difference between KB and Kb. That being KB is 8x bigger than Kb. Most internet speeds by ISP's are advertised at Kbps and not KBps, though in HL the netspeeds are measured in KB. So 768Kbps will actually give you 96KBps. Of course it's very unlikely that you will always have this full rate, so I'd say that you can rely on a little more than 1/2 that. You may be able to get away with 12, but not able to do anything else with your internet connection as the server will use up all your upload bandwidth and you'd be lucky to be able to surf at 33K modem speeds. If you use 10 you may be able to do other things like surf, even play on your own server without lag. 8-9 people shouldn't be a problem though.

Offtopic: Well that one can't be trusted, since I live like in Denmark and the server is in France. these results can be trusted more (Speedtest hosted by my ISP)

On topic : Yes, MS:C works on Linux. You can't play the game but its more stable to host servers with than Windows. To play the actual MS:C you would need a Windows Emulator program such as Wine or others.
