They both have their place and their purpose. Non-linear maps are best for hub areas and exploration, such as the Thornlands or Daragoth. Linear maps are best for missions, or "instances". The Thornlands would lose much of it's charm if it were trimmed down until it is a linear mission to kill the spider queen, but if Ocean Crossing were free roam, it would lose the fun of ship defense. It depends on what the purpose of the map is and what story the level designer wants to tell or aid the players in telling.
