I would love to help!

I just don't have any good talents quite yet, I am trying to learn C++ and it was always a goal for me to program a mod for any of the half-life engines.

I guess I could wip up some models for source, but I know nothing about MS:S and I am not part of the team.

That statement coming from you, of all people, is hilarious.

It all depend on the will of the people, and a bit of luck in finding the right person. At best, I can make maps but I'm rarely around to do it. Though just for shits and giggles I did make the Temple of Light in source.

But then I got to thinking, all too many mods are going for a photrealistic reality approach. Imagine a more cartoony look to make it stand out from the crowd. (Think TF2 only more so in a way) so I stopped to part way though to work some odd ideas out. And came up with some different concepts. But the problem is I lack the time to constantly work on or even complete a single map.

fuzzy, do you know why they go for a photorealistic approach?

its because thats what the vast majority of people want -.- (myself included)

although, realism is boring - it just needs to be believeable (ie: no heads the size of your body, realistic proportions of critters, but cities can be crazy big and have very fancy things - and nature scenes can be made to look really artsy)

Like Wow, everyone hates that game. Then again I have no say in anything besides FuzNet. ;)

Besides the Mastersword world would be the same, I just meant more of a flat-shaded/textured look. Which in some ways could make it much easier to make the textures.

For instance you can make a simple brick texture using a whopping 2 colors. Then just by adding some Bump-mapping (Takes about oh say 2 seconds, on a simple texture) you have a high contract texture that is vibrant is with a decent amount of detail especially when you apply proper lighting to it.

This:

Becomes this:

Granted it's a absurdly simple example. But HL2 has a lot more rendering power and it can do a LOT with something simple. And used properly can make for something eye catching that isn't mistaken for a Dark Messiah rip-off. Granted I'm not even scratching the surface of what HL2 can do in comparison to HL1 with textures.

The first impression a majority of people get of a mod is from pictures. If it looks like something, or even everything else then how do you attract new people when everything else looks just like it.

i see where you're comin from on that last comment...and you've got a point...

i just really dislike cell-shading in general :|

if i want cartoons, i'll go watch cartoons....the only place i'll accept cell shading is games like DBZ, Naruto, and other games made to mimick cartoons/anime

Personally, I take gameplay over graphics.

I'd assume you lot do as well, being fans of MS:C and all, No?

yup that would be me, I feel game just isn't any good if it has zero game play and/or zero story.

I replayed Soldier of Fortune about two months ago, just for the gameplay and the story (obviously not for the graphics)

So yeah, gameplay > graphics as far as I'm concerned.

Well obviously. Gameplay > *

And I'm not in reference to cell-shading, that has no place here. I'm more in reference to a flat shaded style. I'll probably work on a better example later on, recreating a small portion of edana.

I am waiting for RTM but thats a totally new game. MS:S should not look as "cartoony" as RTM or your pics Gaz. To me, MS:S should look dark and scary

.. like the new zelda compared to Wind Waker (or maker, I dont know looks stupid)

People who dislike Zelda: Wind Waker have never actually played it or gave it a serious chance, I'm betting.

It's my second favorite in the series now, for total badass-ness.

Nothing wrong with Cel-Shading.

For my money, I'd be interested in seeing MS:S move to a more stylized look than boring old near photo-realism. Especially since stylized = tons more content, almost certainly (near photo-realism takes a long time to make).

I get turned away from cel-shaded games because of the "kiddy" look it has to it. The only zelda games I like (And I LOVE Zelda games, I was actually link for a holloween in my younger years) are the very first one for NES, LoZ: Ocarnia of Time, and the new one that is out, Twilight Princess. LoZ:TP actually won game of the year by G4TechTV.

But that is my opinion.

its close to how I think MS:S should be like, although for me I would like it a tad less cartoony in the landscape, I love rich enviroments. Exploration is my favorite aspect of games.
