Re: [Section 1] Caluminium's Entry

it looks like it has some nice brushwork , but id suggest maybe changing the aztech looking stuff. maybe make a custom texture using a photo edited pic of the mods current dwarf and overlays?

Ceriux makes a good point about the aztec decorations. They weren't there when I ran the map with you, if i recall.

No lore expert but the dwarves could have used differents metal plates to put on their walls and carved runes and pictures into it. That might look good for the forge parts, the mine part should remain "dusty and dirty" imo.

I like it :)

I feel sick, although it's probably from the Chinese food I just ate....

Its so beautiful and it puts my efforts to shame. Well done Caluminium you have inspired me to try harder at mapping... maybe once I have figured out how lighting works, then I will be able to try for such beauty!

Re: [Section 1] Caluminium's Entry

Caluminium,

I really liked this map it has a lot of promise with its layout.

Brushwork: Good clean brushwork, great performance for an indoor map. Some areas are simple but that's ok because the textures work to get the feeling right. 8/10

Lighting: The lighting is simple but effective. I like that you didn't turn the rock formations into entities to save on performance. It really made the shadow effects better. 8/10

Textures: A lot of the same textures but it's a cave map so that's how it should be. The rock textures worked well for the cave feeling. It also made the simple brushwork rooms areas not look boxy. Maybe edit the bridge texture to match other texture theme. 8/10.

Layout/Looks: Good layout! Looks very promising. A good variety of different themed rooms for a cave map. 9/10

Overall I'd say 8.5/10

Caluminium

Score: 8/10

Brushwork - 9/10

This map has gorgeous brushwork. The rock formations look fantastic. This map qualifies as a good map due to the brushwork alone.

Entwork - 4/10

Nothing special here, but what entities are in the map are chosen intelligently to help optimize the playing experience. This is a good, well made map with clean, logical entity work.

Layout - 7/10

The layout is also really good. It's just elaborate enough to be interesting, but simple enough to keep it from being confusing. The only two things I can think of that could make the layout better is if the map were bigger, and if there were more secret areas.

Lighting - 8/10

The lights in this map are beautiful and compliment the texture choice perfectly. Not much can be said here, since there isn't anything special about the lighting, but it does it's job perfectly.

Textures - 8/10

This is probably the best map in the contest when it comes to textures. Cal has a real talent for mixing and matching different textures. Everything about the texturing in this map is picture perfect, with the exception of the out of place aztec art, and that is the only reason I'm not giving a score of 9 or 10 for texturing.

Overall I give this map an 8/10.

Re: [Section 1] Caluminium's Entry

Judging Caluminium's Entry

The Good:
• Some custom media included! (Only submission using any!)
• Detailed textures definition file! (Only submission with one!)
- Although, I think Valve broke this function in the last patch... :\
• Some custom textures (that were actually included in the map).
• Well lit, nicely done caves.
• Fairly good size.

The Bad:
• Not populated.
• Weee bit boxy and mono-textured here and there.

Upon spawning in the first cave, the first words out of my mouth were, "F*ck me. This wins..."

Not sure how play flow is gonna work, as there's no stopping advancement from one area to the other, nor any obvious goals in place... Depending on your monster layout and density, it may need some expansion - I suppose you could open up the area around the waterfall and make a pit/ravine, open to the sky, or some such - would add some variety to scenery.

Final:
9/10 - Dyaaamn....
