I don't know if there is a script command for trace_hull, but it would certainly fix that and another similar issues. IIRC, its basically trace_line, but instead of a direction its coords and the size of the object.

Not at all. Sure, the artifact system can take some of the blame, but I know for a fact the problem doesn't end there. And with the artifact system at least the players get some of the enjoyment out of doing the map, my main concern is with just randomly giving out items to new players. Yes...
