I know its been an "issue" forever, but what is the fascination with it recently? I could understand handing extra items to friends to help them out and such, but really... tossing rares to new players to spite people on the forums?

I wouldn't really care that much, its just that A LOT of people have come up to me recently and said thats its a game breaking issue. I know back in the ms_snow days I had about 15 GiBs at one time, but I didn't go to thornlands and hand them out. Maybe its because I wasn't craving the acceptance of new players because 90% of the vets hate me, like some people... who knows.

Whatever the reason, I do believe that giving new players every item they could ever want is not a good thing for them. Sure, its nice to give stuff out and all, but think about it for a full minute. It really does ruin a lot of their experience with this game, and it takes the fun out of it. And if you're willing to ruin the game experience for other players, then you don't belong in this community, go sit in the corner with Vlad.

As a preemptive response: No I'm not overreacting to this issue. In my experience, people that end up with everything the first week of playing usually quit within the month.

I agree with you Shurik3n. People have to work for the things they want and not just ask someone else to give it to them. It's almost like in Diablo 2. I saw someone who is like level 5 and has already this glowing armor and that helmet... that's not okay.
Giving newbies things with great power right at the start destroys the actual goal of obtaining better equipment. And getting better equipment makes almost 50% of the gameplay of an rpg.

The new artifact system has been giving people who did NOTHING AT ALL random RARE items, AoB, Bldugys and the like. Its a real piss off to see some level 30 retard who sits behind the f*cking wall doing nothing, then get some sh!t. There are these little b*stards these days who make people who actually fight and do some work look like retards.

People still use it. And if they cant use it right now, they just store it until they can. Furthermore, armor etc has no requirements (or did I miss something?). Ok, the weight maybe, but I still have seen lowlevlers using such armors.

You have a point with the armor thing, but basically this thread ended at:

Not at all. Sure, the artifact system can take some of the blame, but I know for a fact the problem doesn't end there. And with the artifact system at least the players get some of the enjoyment out of doing the map, my main concern is with just randomly giving out items to new players. Yes, theres a level requirement for weapons, but that doesn't change the fact that they still wont have to go and find that item.

I can sum up the whole conversation:

Group1: "Twinking" ruins the gameplay of low levels because they won't have the desire to obtain the weapon and explore for themselves and thus they won't level and will not feel the need to continue playing the game.

Group2: but the artifact chest does it

Group1: Yes the artifact chest does contribute but there's no reason to go about and handing out the items yourself.

Group2: ya but the artifact chest does it and there are level requirements

...
Level requirements doesn't stop low levels from not wanting to do harder maps to obtain that same item. To play harder map, they must want to level their character and I doubt they want to level there character as much when they already have the weapon they've seen high levels carrying around.

And yea, sure they'll want to level their character to use that item, but you've already destroyed the excitement of earning that weapon on their own, so their desire to play the game is much lower than what it should of been.

Twinking < Power leveling
Twinking is out of laziness and lacks the consideration for low levels.
Power leveling is... well, the exact opposite, and brings the player closer to the community.

There will always be people who hate seeing low levels have high level weapons/armor, the people who are doing the "twinking" is just setting up those low levels to be hated for no reason and seperating the low levels and high levels even further.

tl;dr, "twinking" is out of ignorance.

EDIT: Artifact chest should be changed back to the way it was, but it doesn't mean you should do the exact same thing it's doing.

And you wonder why Thothie nerfs everything

Seriously, if you don't like that the artys are twinking everyone, then why are you doing it?

Let me know when I stop making sense.

Good place to start, actually. You can use the hoarfrost's ice circle when you lack the level to wield it.

Maybe that can be fixed...

I just know that I only play this mod when New content and weapons are released. As plenty of people have heard me note, I left for 8 months out of boredom, and came back at the April patch. In about 2 weeks I had everything the new content had to offer, half of the stuff I got was of my own effort, doing the maps and earning, the other half way just tossed at me. I could have 7 hoarfrosts *without having done anything different* right now just because they were tossed around. There's not enough fun in this mod, I have no reason to level other than to keep on the edge of the level ramp/wep requierments.

It's not much fun to use the newer weapons, some are overkill and too easy, others are like using and angry sea bass to try to kill my enemy. An angry sea bass may be the baddest small fish around, but it's still an effing limp fish compared to a *blood drinking hit everything sword*. This game is gear based, level, skill, and the non-existant factors of class/specialization choice have nothing to do with doing well in this game. So when you get all the gear in two weeks, you've beaten the game, you've got the pinnacle of achievement. The only goals for this game are get all the best gear, and get to whatever level for whatever hp you need to get the next gear.

Why level if you get the gear handed to you? Sure, if you wanna use some of it you need to level, but what's the motivation to use the new weapons? To level? Why level, you've got the best gear. Because of this, the gear flood is killing the game, if you're going to make a game gear based, you had better damn well have a good handle on how it's distributed, and how it's balanced.

You are here --> X
Skills would decrease the importance of having the right gear a little, which would make levelling more interesting and desired.

Races and classes should solve that, it seems.
