Just saying hi, im FU aka Tigerstyle, im a 3d modeler, can model basically anything, i use 3dsmax.

Anyways im more interested in doing some work for the source engine.
Ive done alot of 3rd party models for The Specialists mod about 2yrs ago.
And am fairly well known by their community.

Heres a screenie of one of my models.

Un-optimized 3800 polys, 4000 target limit.

Some good flow you have there, what version of 3dsmax do you use?

In the material ed, choose "2 sided" for double sided. Also try this method here:

http://monkeysushi.com/gamers/viewtopic.php?t=32

Thats generally how I render my wireframes. Also for the floor, apply a matt/shadow material for no floor seams

Guess there wasnt a problem with my max settings after all. Ill update my pic in a few. Thanks for tip Gaz.
Using 3dsmax max 6, i only learnt 3.1 at Qantm Games Development Studio 8yrs ago, so im still getting used to it.

The Basic shape dosnt take very long, building and welding all the faces somtimes takes a bit of tinkering.

Edge extrution is my preferred method of modeling though, so i dont mind the extra time spent fixing the extra polys.

I think you'd be a good addition to the team, but its not up to me. Have to see what the other think as well :)

Looking at the head mesh, I know its not complete, but there are a lot of vertical lines and sharp angles, and the overall shape is quite boxey

Heres what I mean:

Try and make the mesh flow more like this

orc2.jpg

Loops like this will help get your mesh looking more organic, and will lend itself to facial animation later on.
Hope that helps a little, good work none the less :)

Yet again, thanks for your valuable help Gaz.
Ill wait till ive completed the full mesh before i fix those lines, all thats left on the mesh to do, is the feet arms and hands. I might straighten the lines a bit then free form deform the head into the shape i want.
I might have it completed tomorrow if i can get through all my studies.

Fixed most of the head, lost some detail round the cheek bones, can fix that later.

3800 polys so far, since hearing that im in, ive decided to take more care in the model instead of rushing.

I take it that he is an orc?

If so I think he could really do with a much bigger head. He looks huge at the moment, like 7-8 foot tall.
Some lovely flow on the muscles though :)

Well, Orcs are supposed to be imposing. I like this design a lot. I certainly don't think you should change it much. :D

Granted, someone has to skin that monster.

Winters approaching us in AUstralia and my fingers are freezing making it harder to model, my pinky is frozen stiff on the ctrl key.

Other than that, im doing the hands next and then the elbow, knees. Then ill add detail to the torso and muscle definition to the back.

5700 polys.

Orcs can be big small skinny or fat. WoW, Lineage2, LotR etc..
If the team wants this model for MS we could do a poll and see what the community wants. (once the models finished)

Proportions can be changed easily enough.

Also, since torso model isnt clothed, it could be used as a template for other creatures, Ogre's, Cyclops, Yeti's, werewolf, lizardmen, Giants etc.

I used far too many polys on the hands, so im up to 9k in polys.

But it looks great!
Simplification of the nails on the hands might alleviate some of those problems.

In my opinion, this is an Orc, the way that MS Orcs should be. The current MS:C Orcs were relatively decent for what they were supposed to be, but I think this finally captures the essence of dramatic, imposing evil that the Orcat of the world should be. Plus like you said, it's also somewhat templatable, and could be used for other things with minor alterations.

Excellent model.

It'd be easier for you to make a new monster called an Ogre... I dunno if you looked at the current orc model (msc/models/monsters/Orc.mdl) - but they have about 10 different outfits, hats, and weapons integrated into that model as submodels, and you'd have to remake all those as well.

Might be a good replacement for that giant bear or trolls on Heras.

Stop!

Keep the model for the projection map!! In fact save now, and make it even more detailed, and then another version to about 4000 polys. Then we can make some sexy normal maps 8)

If your not sure on a projection map, I can do it on my pc, otherwise you'll need max 8 :)
