My information.
I'm calling on those who still pay a bit of attention to this mod to make an effort at bringing in new players.

While the mod still has a ways (and by ways, I mean a GREAT ways) to go, this is still a pretty damn fun game here. Rather than see it die the horrible death that god-awful mods experience, I'd like to see new vigor and life come back into the community.
So, anybody here wanna pitch in, in an effort at bringing new members to the gaming community?

This would comprise of player-to-player interactions, tell real-life buddies who dig video games about it, make homemade game trailers (perhaps a thread to host a competition between such homemade videos, and get a real nice one out on youtube...?), and so forth.

Essentially, to bring fresh blood into MSC and keep the updates coming, so we old dogs might one day see a finished product.

I've been doin' that around my friends before and I still continue to distribute in this kind of way, towards this awesome mod. :)

For me I also don't wish to see it dying or however one may articulate it.

So I keep on "recruitin' in real-life and my steam friendslist.

And good goin' Netrogor, for bringin' that up!!

I usually mention it to friends who play/used to play half life related stuff. Thing is, with the amount of people i meet these days, most of them don't have half life in their libraries, it's sad... Most of them have half life 2, but not half life. I feel like they are missing a good deal right there, half life brings in alot more fun than half life 2, just look at the mods and the answer is right there...

I already posted in some websites in related topics, but never bothered to start a topic myself, i might start one on steamgifts.com, though the outcome in this could be random. So i don't know if it will help or not.

EDIT: Here's my shot at it, i hope this works. :?

EDIT2: 2nd shot

Nice zeus - love how quick ya helped rope that new player in.

With that sort of advertising - nice and friendly, letting potential fans of this type of game know of its existence, I can see a vibrant community coming back (which, maybe, would lead to faster, more comprehensive patch releases, potential additions to dev-team, etc?).

Now - my post-starting idea... a thread to vote on a series of player-made trailers to show off the game (possibly throw it up on youtube). Thoughts, opinions, feelings?

There are already a few made by Caluminium. Having a massive amount of videos like that might not help that much...

I would rather see videos based around a certain goal, like a video showing 5-10 seconds of each unique boss battle. Another one showing 10 seconds of each beautifull spot in each map, with perhaps bloom added. Videos showing people having some pvp, running around in open areas or towns... Stuff like this is what i think would attract people.

Oh and a video showing the very beginning of the game as to what skill you choose and what's the effectiveness behind each skill, etc.

EDIT: It seems to be hard to improve the player database via forums, at least i'm not getting much success yet... Guess i'll have to bump later on and hope that a small part of the 185,713 Members in there notice the thread and give it a try.

It'd be great to get more players, just make sure that people don't spoil them with high tier items.
Half the fun of the game is discovery and achievement.

I'm working on the wiki to get it more beginner friendly.

once i posted something over at onrpg.com maybe its a good time to post again?

Go for it, i was hoping steamgifts would bring in some people, since it seemed like the best place to advertise the mod as people go there for multiple things, mostly winning games. Though it's being a hard task, i guess i really need to make some giveaways to bring peoples attention to this mod :|

I've been inactive in MSC as of late because I've been moderating/scripting/coding for a Mount and Blade Warband mod.

Gave a shot at advertising MSC there, but I have no idea how many of the players there actually have Half-Life.

We can do something like that if you want, get some players together to start planning and filming a great video.

The best way to bring players to this game is to recruit more developers.

I still thinking having some sort of mapping or modelling contest would bring some peeps around. I'm sure the people would play the mod since they contributed something to it.

Hell, I'd chip in $20 for prize money/games.

I actually have very vague, half baked plans to do something like this in the semi-distant future. Thing is, however, after the last contest there is no way I am ever offering this 'community' actual prizes that cost real money.

Giving cosmetic items ingame isn't a way to go either.

I kinda agree with the previous comment you made, but we know it's difficult to find people who are willing to work for the mod.

And i have a plan, sort of. Might use it later, going to create an event based around ms:c, like asking questions about things that are ingame, and to learn those things people would have to play the mod. This would have to be limited to newcomers only, older players would have to be excluded since it's no fair if things went that way...

The rewards would be random steamgifts, so if people wanted to have a chance at winning let's say, half life 2, they would have to play ms:c to find out about the answer related to the event. It's a silly way to advertise the mod, but it will likely work, at the cost of some money... If i happen to make 5 giveaways for skyrim and ask people to play ms:c untill they reach level 20-25 in title while on FN, i'm pretty sure the playerbase would increase by the hundreds fast.
Free games/gifts = attracts hoards of people, specially if they are part of the "most wished" on steam.

Sadly for you, this is not TF2, so you only get cosmetic/pew pew items in return. :p

The donation would pretty much go for hosting the website/forums... i don't see any other use for donations in this community, unless people would want to gather an event like the one i'm planning. I still haven't started it yet because i'm busy irl, and money right now is hard to come by since i need to save up to travel to a new country in hopes of starting a new life. If everything goes well, then i'll be able to help the community by making events and stuff like that, to bring in new people from other communities. And that will start in January 2013, if everything goes right as planned. :D

Amen. Even more so than donations at this point.

It's pretty much been just me, and one or two mappers, for months now. I've had next to no time for MSC, and the mappers can't do much of anything without me. What we really need is someone willing to take the time to learn the scripting system inside out, without falling into the temptation of simply hacking up god items. Someone willing to maintain focus on game expansion, rather than how powerful he can become.

But the odds of finding any developer willing to dedicate that kind of time to an ancient goldsrc mod...

I've also been considering dedicating what MSC time I do have to finish writing up a proper scripting Wiki (which is easier to do on the road, as it doesn't require a constant Steam connection), save for the fact that we have no wiki, and I don't see a reliable place to put one, off hand, now that my host is gone. I dunno if anyone has any suggestions as to where to put a new Wiki. :?

A new, updated, global beginner's guide sticky might help as well (also to be stuck up on the IMDB). Not sure what happened to the old one (just vanished), and the one on IMDB, while a good start, could use some updating.

Perhaps the front page and any website/community used to advertise the mod, like moddb.

Making a new section on the main page with "tutorials" or something like that should do the trick, and it's probably the best reliable source we have now to put anything like that for others to follow/look at. Wiki's aren't good reliable sources...

PS: Where did wishbone ran off to? Wasn't he learning how to script for ms:c a few months ago?

Lost in my mind.
I basically gave up, and quit playing the mod. I started going on when there were other people on and tried my best to help a few new players out. I got into web design and development I wanted to redo MSC's website because it's little messy, but never got in contact with Lord K about it, so I just left it to go to dust. Maybe, when i'm out of high school and such I'll have the time to learn scripting to help the mod... Also, Thothie you should find a other way to talk to people on the spot instead of the PMs, I wish I had ideas for that, but I don't. Also, maybe write something up that has all the syntax and such. Well, good luck to you guys.

If I had less college work I'd be here more often and would be actively trying to get people to play the game.
The three I got to try the game didn't stick around, which is sad.

I'm just trying to play and keep a server populated. Helping newer players on the odd chance they show up etc.

Hey, I was wondering when do you guys play on the servers? I see you talk about bringing in new people but when they get in either one by one or handfuls at a time. How are you gonna encourage them to play on a server that is empty? I mean I go to play and I have added the listed servers on the main page but none of them had players playing on them. So I end up just playing single player (later found out single player accounts don't actually transfer to multiplayer servers) by my lonesome. So if anyone here could provide times as to when people are actually in the servers then maybe I can hop on and play with them. Thanks.
