Edana - leak?

hey guys i was playing today and i noticed something ( and i may be wrong ) but it seems edana may have a leak in it somewhere. edana's a fairly small map, and there isnt very many big open spaces. so there should really be no problems rendering it. well i went to thornlands which is a slightly larger map, it also has much larger open areas. but it runs a lot smoother. something else i noticed in edana is that it actually raises my ping. while in thornlands my ping stays fairly low. just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if the problem is already known?

Threads like these always force me to say "PIX OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN" in order to stop myself from punching some random object because the thread starter forgot that the thread is useless without screenshots in the first place.

Any specific area on the map where you get slowdown?

I remember I used to get a drop in FPS when looking at the town gate when I had my old laptop (long ago)

Im thinking this is the same as what happened with the old skycastle

I don't get performance issues anywhere these days, even where there are leaks (like Unrest), but I switch on the poly count out of curiosity from time to time, and never saw anything out of line in Edana.

The main plaza in Gatecity, some areas of Helena, most of Deralia, and the terraces of Shad Palace, all have performance issues without any leaks. Just nasty wpoly due to poor vis design or over-ambition (or, in some cases, non-existent vis blocking efforts from folks who thought OpenGL graphics technology was going to get better, rather than worse).

If you want to play a map that is pure leak, load up Unrest. Lovely boxed map.

i can post the ping differences too if you need. they're a little skewed atm cause of another player. but its more or less the same.

in thornlands my fps gets up in the 60's

240 and 370 wpoly. It's not the map, it's something your card doesn't like. That's even inline with software standard.

Maybe something your CPU doesn't like as well - but there's a lot more CPU being used in Thornlands than in Edana. :/

Also could be a string of textures, each larger than 256x256 - some cards don't like those. Dynamic lighting and some sprites tend to set off some cards too.

still, if it was that. then why does thornlands run so smooth? also why would it make my ping raise? i mean yes i have a fairly old video card. but i never had problems... well till windows 7. but once again. why would thornlands run nice and not edana?

Hrmmm... Yer getting crappy FPS with a low poly count, so there has to be something in particular running about that your card doesn't like... Like I said, sprites, dynamic lights, and oversized textures are usually the culprits when it comes to some lines of cards failing the OpenGL standard. ...Now... What does Edana have that Thornlands doesn't... Hrmm...

Only thing I can think of, is maybe the help sprites - if you type help in chat or console, it should toggle them on or off. See if your FPS skyrockets with them about.

I think there's at least one dynamic light in Edana too - maybe the fire in the inn? I'm not sure - the torches in the hallway to the healing pool may flicker as well. I don't think any of the lights in Thornlands are dynamic though (ie. flicker, toggle, or move). So that maybe it. There's some console commands regarding dynamic lighting in the "MSC for low-end computers" section, me thinks, if your FPS goes up around them.

Both Thornlands and Edana have oversized textures - indeed they share some - not sure which has more exposed. If your FPS only goes up in certain areas, they maybe the issue. Might be able to get around that with an alternate wad file, not sure.

Animated/liquid textures and {solid render objects cause problems for some cards, especially if you've got odd anti-aliasing settings, but both maps share pretty much the same number of both types of brushes/textures.

i think its the opengl thing. since iv installed windows 7 my computer only halfway supports it... just when it feels like it i suppose. the sprites were a big problem. but i disabled them and it helped some.

*sigh* Vista/Seven... I've not used my Seven boot in ages... Wonder if it still works.

In quazi-GL's defense, they are unusual sprites, I suppose - think some are 512x512 textures. You might get similar slowdown wherever an unusually large transparent texture is used - such as the pentagrams in the Blacksmith's chamber in Calruins... Maybe the water in Ara.

Do you have an ATI card by any chance? those seem to do badly in pretty much any game that doesn't use ARB shaders(old hl1 games, some other old open gl games.). I get rather crappy performance in edana in some parts and in parts of most of the other maps, some worse then others. On ATI cards nearly everything is processed in software mode(barely if any hardware acceleration is done.) when in open gl mode, the gpu load on my card stays at a nearly solid 25%(only deviates at about 1-2% at times.) when playing so it's not doing much, probably most of the load is coming from presenting the picture to the screen.

The wall, not the worse fps I've gotten there, can get down to as low as 6-10fps if there's more then 4 people playing on that map in parts.

The comp I'm running on is a pretty old one, an AMD 64 3500+ @2.2ghz(it's a single core....), ATI HD4650, SB x-fi xtream gamer and 2x1gb of ddr1 ram...

no i have a nvidia fx 5500. its old but seems reliable enough so far. just cant wait to get my job so i can get myself a whole new pc!

I think model load also counts towards slowing you slightly, hence why the_wall might lag more the farther you go (unless you reconnect)

I had one of those when I started playing MSC(and it was years old before then)... I don't think that's really your problem. What are your other system specs? I used to have this Dell that ran MSC alright. 2.6ghz intel pcu, geforce 5500 fx 256MB, 1 gig of ram. It only had a problem hosting because of monster spawns, and goddamn if we went to foutpost :mrgreen:

its none of that. msc used to run wonderful till i installed 7. since then its had all sorts of issues with opengl.

It's a shame that I can't play any of my favourite goldsource mods, such as Natural Selection or MSC.

Ya try a new network card yet?

The goldsrc netcode isn't as old as the OpenGL bits, and they've updated it more than anything else in the code. So if HL1 is giving you net problems, you'll probably come across another, more modern game, that will as well.

If ya want, I can go over your cvars, maybe there's an odd setting stuck in there for some reason.

In console, type:

There should then be a txt file in your MSC folder called condump001.txt (or something along those lines) - ye can post its contents here - maybe we can find something.

(Note that the game will hang a few seconds after you type condump.)

I haven't tried replacing the network card since I'm not sure if I have another one around this place. I've had this card for a while and it's never had any problems.
