Using Magic
From Master Sword Wiki
First of all, you must have access a spell in some way. Magic spells are found in two common varieties:
- Tomes - Tomes are books containing the required meditations to permanently memorize a spell. (If you have selected the "Erratic Lightning" in the stage of choosing your character, you have that spell already memorized!) A Tome can be memorized by equipping it on your hands and "using" it (click the left mouse button). This will make your character memorize the spell, and after that you can use it. The human mind is limited, however, and you can only memorize a maximum of eight spells. Attempting to memorize more than eight spells will consume the nineth tome without granting the spell. By pressing the Spell Menu key (2 by default) you can select the spell you want to cast, and once the description of the spell you want to cast appears on the left-downmost corner, you can prepare the spell by pressing your "attack" key.
- Scrolls - Scrolls require a Spell Book for storage, or they will vanish upon their first use. Although they are just as effective as Tomes, they are not as quickly accessed, as one must open up the Inventory Menu (3 by default), click on the Spell Book container, find the proper spell, and double click on the scroll item to prepare it. However, there is no limit to the number of Scrolls you can carry, and thus they do not suffer from the eight-spell limit as the Tomes do, thus they are more highly sought after, and more expensive to purchase. Plus, when preparing a scroll, you are not frozen in place as your are when preparing a Tome memorized spell. Sadly, due to how the scroll system is implemented, if the server crashes while you are preparing the spell, you may lose your scroll.
Both Tomes and Scrolls are only usable by those with the appropriate spell casting skill, which varies with each spell. When you prepare a spell, there will be a short delay as the spell is prepared; if you are too low to use the scroll or memorize a tome you will be notified in the message window. Be warned that the spell may fail; if it does you will be notified in the message window in the lower right. Note that Scrolls cannot fail, only tomes. If it fails, you can try again. Once a spell is prepared, the "magic-object" is created in your hands and you can use your "attack" key to cast it's effect. If you at this point prepare it again, it will create the "magic-object" again instead of actually using the spell's effect. Once a duration (Determined by various stats) expires, the spell expires and you must prepare it again. Preparing it again before time expires will reset the timer. Note that certain spells may function differently when cast. Additionally, there are two other ways to use spells, detailed below:
- Wands & Staffs - Wands & Staffs have various magical effects and spell like abilities, some of which are fixed at a specific level of effectiveness, while others are dependant on the users' various magical skills. Some can be used by anyone, regardless of the user's magical capacity.
- Magical Weapons - Some magical weapon's have damage or secondary effects that are dependant on the owner's magical skills. Greater Holy Arrows, for instance, are dependant on the user's Divination Spells skill. While the Dark Maul's secondary effects are dependant on the owner's Fire Spells skill.
