Leather is a good armor for range and magic ONLY low to mid level players. If you are someone who uses a sword, axe, mace, dagger, or martial arts, it is near useless...but still better than nothing.

The different types of leather armor:

Torn Leather Vest - The worst of the leather armors, but also the cheapest. (anything is better than nothing)

Leather Vest - The middle quality leather armor, a bit better than torn leather...but still not very good protection.

Studded Leather - The best leather armor currently ingame, this is what you'll want to use if you like your speed, or if you dont intend to do much upclose fighting. (I suggest training blunt arms or axes a little, even if you dont intend to use them, to gain some health)

Cobra-skin Vest - This magical leather vest has been fashioned from the scales of a poisonous creature. The resulting enchantment gives the wearer poison resistance, in addition to providing much better protection than even the studded leather vest.

Fire-lizard Vest - This vest has been fashioned from the hide of a fire lizard, and as such, gives the wearer fire resistance(75%), in addition to providing much better protection than even the studded leather vest.

Fire-lizard Vest Note: Can be used to get to some areas you usually can't get to because of fire damage, has superb resistance.

Gladiator Armour - This rare armour will provide the wearer with the protection of plate mail for half the weight. Can't be bought, must find.
